To check GST return filing status, go to gst.gov.in. Without logging in, click Search Taxpayer, enter the GSTIN and click Show Filing Table. After logging in, use Services, then Returns, then Track Return Status, and search by ARN, return period or status. For a GST payment, use Track Payment Status with your GSTIN and CPIN.
This guide shows each way step by step, explains what every return status and payment status means, and tells you what to do when a payment has left your bank but does not show on the GST portal.
Looking for the status of a new GST registration application instead? That is tracked by ARN on our GST ARN status check tool.
- Anyone can see a business's return filing details without logging in: Search Taxpayer, enter the GSTIN, then Show Filing Table.
- Your own returns have four statuses: To be filed, Submitted but not filed, Filed - Valid and Filed - Invalid.
- GST payment status needs your GSTIN and the CPIN of the challan. No CPIN? Log in and open Challan History.
- A challan you do not pay within 15 days expires. Create a new one.
- Money left your bank but no CIN was generated? You can raise Form GST PMT-07 on the GST portal.
Which option to use
| What you want to check | Where on gst.gov.in | Login needed? | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whether any business (yours or a supplier) has filed its returns | Search Taxpayer, then Search by GSTIN/UIN, then Show Filing Table | No | The GSTIN |
| The status of your own return | Services, then Returns, then Track Return Status | Yes | ARN, return period or status |
| The status of one GST payment | Services, then Payments, then Track Payment Status | No | GSTIN and CPIN |
| All your GST payments, with or without a CPIN | Services, then Payments, then Challan History | Yes | A date range or a CPIN |
Check GST filing status by GST number, without login
This works for any GSTIN, so you can use it for your own business or to see whether a supplier is filing returns.
- Open www.gst.gov.in and click Search Taxpayer, then Search by GSTIN/UIN.
- Enter the GSTIN in the "GSTIN/UIN of the Taxpayer" field.
- Type the characters shown in the image (the captcha) and click Search.
- The business details appear. Click Show Filing Table.
- Choose the financial year and click Search. The return filing details for that year appear.
Two more buttons on the same screen help:
- Show Return Filing Frequency tells you whether the business files monthly or quarterly. A business in the QRMP scheme files every quarter, so you will see one entry for each quarter.
- Filing Frequency of Previous FY shows the same for the year before.
Our reading: this search shows whether returns were filed. It does not show how much tax the business paid. So it can tell you that a supplier filed, but not that the supplier paid the tax.
Track your own GST return status after login
- Log in at www.gst.gov.in.
- Go to Services, then Returns, then Track Return Status.
- Pick one way to search:
- ARN: enter the ARN you got by email when you submitted the return.
- Return Filing Period: choose the financial year and the period.
- Status: choose the financial year and a status from the list, for example every return that is still "To be filed".
- Click Search. The status for that financial year appears.
You also get the return's ARN by email when you submit it, so keep that email. It is the quickest way to find one return later.
GST return status meanings, and what to do
The GST portal uses four return statuses.
| Status on the portal | What it means (portal's words) | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| To be filed | Return due but not filed | File it. Late returns attract a late fee, and unpaid tax attracts interest |
| Submitted but not filed | Return validated but pending filing | Open the return and finish filing it. Until you file it, it is not filed |
| Filed - Valid | Return filed | Nothing. Keep the ARN as proof |
| Filed - Invalid | Return filed but tax not paid or short paid | Check the tax payment for that period and pay what is still due. Interest runs on unpaid tax under section 50 of the CGST Act |
Old returns cannot be filed after three years. Since 1 October 2023, the law says a return cannot be filed after three years from its due date. The GST portal started blocking such returns from the July 2025 tax period. For example, GSTN said that GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for June 2022 were barred from 1 August 2025. So a return that has shown "To be filed" for close to three years needs attention now.
Check GST return status for past years, such as 2020-21
Both ways above let you choose the financial year. In Search Taxpayer, pick the year after you click Show Filing Table. In Track Return Status, pick the year before you search. So the steps for 2020-21 or any other year are the same as for this year.
Download a filed GSTR-3B
- Log in and go to Services, then Returns, then Returns Dashboard.
- Choose the financial year and the return filing period, and click Search.
- Check that the GSTR-3B tile shows the return as filed.
- On the GSTR-3B tile, use the download option to save the filed return as a PDF.
To know the difference between the two main monthly returns, read GSTR-1 vs GSTR-3B.
How to check GST payment status (challan status)
You do not need to log in.
- Open www.gst.gov.in and go to Services, then Payments, then Track Payment Status.
- Enter your GSTIN (or other ID) and the CPIN of the challan.
- Type the captcha and click Track Status.
- The payment status appears. Click View Challan to see the challan, and Download to save it as a PDF.
If the challan shows Not Paid and you chose e-payment, you can open the challan from here and try the payment again.
Check GST payment status without CPIN
If you do not have the CPIN, log in instead.
- Log in and go to Services, then Payments, then Challan History.
- Your latest 10 challans appear with their payment status.
- To look further back, choose a From and To date. To find one challan, search by CPIN.
- Click a CPIN to open the challan. A payment receipt is shown only for challans with the status Paid.
The GST portal also sends you the payment status by SMS and email.
GST payment status meanings
These are the payment statuses the GST portal uses.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Paid | The payment reached your Electronic Cash Ledger |
| Not Paid | The challan was created but not paid yet. Every new challan starts here |
| Initiated | You started an e-payment and the portal is waiting for the bank to confirm it |
| Awaiting Bank Confirmation | The e-payment is waiting for approval at the bank |
| Awaiting Bank Clearance | You paid over the counter, the bank has accepted the challan, and the money is still on its way |
| Failed | The bank told the portal the payment did not go through |
| No Response from Bank | You started the payment, but the portal got no reply from the bank |
| Expired | No payment was made within 15 days of creating the challan |
| Blocked | Money left your bank account, but the challan had already expired on the portal |
| Cheque/DD Dishonored | The bank did not accept the cheque or demand draft, for example for lack of funds |
| Paid at tax Office | A tax officer collected the tax and deposited it at the bank |
What to do:
- Expired: create a new challan. A challan is valid for 15 days.
- Not Paid: pay it before it expires, or let it expire and create a new one when you are ready.
- Failed, No Response from Bank or Blocked, and your bank account shows the money as debited: see the next sections.
Paid the challan? Your return is a separate step
A Paid status means the money is in your Electronic Cash Ledger. The law lets you use that balance to pay tax, interest, late fee and other amounts. For the monthly tax, the ledger balance is used in the payment table of GSTR-3B (table 6.1) when you file. So paying the challan and filing the return are two different steps, and the return still has to be filed by its due date.
CPIN, CIN and BRN: what each number means
| Number | Full form | Who creates it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPIN | Common Portal Identification Number | The GST portal, for every challan you create | Which challan it is. You need it to track the payment. Valid for 15 days |
| CIN | Challan Identification Number | Your bank, when the payment goes through | That the payment was made. A CIN is proof of payment |
| BRN | Bank Reference Number | Your bank | The bank's own transaction number for the payment |
Money debited but GST payment not showing?
Sometimes money leaves your bank account but no CIN reaches the GST portal, so the challan does not show as Paid.
- Raise Form GST PMT-07. Rule 87(8) of the CGST Rules says that when your bank account is debited but no CIN is generated, or it is generated but not sent to the GST portal, you can complain electronically in Form GST PMT-07 through the portal. On the portal it is under Services, then Payments, then Grievance against Payment (GST PMT-07). Keep the CPIN, the date the money left your account, and the BRN ready.
- The ledger can still be updated. If the bank does not send the CIN, the rules allow your Electronic Cash Ledger to be updated from the Reserve Bank of India's e-scroll, when its details match your challan.
- GST helpdesk. For any other problem, call the GST helpdesk toll free on 1800-103-4786, or lodge a complaint on the GST self-service portal (selfservice.gstsystem.in) using Report Issue. To see where your complaint stands, use Check Status on the same site with your ticket number. This is also how you check a GST grievance or ticket status.
