GST interest and late fee calculator

GST interest is 18% a year on the tax you pay late in cash, for each day after the due date. The late fee for GSTR-3B or GSTR-1 is ₹50 a day (₹20 for a nil return), up to a limit based on your turnover. Enter your dates and amounts below to see both, using the same formula as the GST portal.

What do you want to work out?
Dates
GSTR-3B: 20th of the next month (22nd or 24th for quarterly filers). GSTR-1: 11th (13th for quarterly filers).
Pick a future date to see what it will cost if you file then.
Is it a nil return?
Nil means no tax to pay in the return.
Your aggregate turnover for the whole of the previous financial year.
Amounts
The tax left to pay after using your input tax credit. Interest is charged only on this part.
If you paid the challan by the due date and the money stayed in your Electronic Cash Ledger until you filed, enter it here. If the balance went up and down, enter the lowest balance in that time. This part is not charged interest.
Enter a valid due date.

This is a guide, not the GST portal's figure. The portal works out interest for each tax head (IGST, CGST, SGST, cess), so its total can differ slightly. It does not include penalties.

This calculator works out two separate charges. The late fee is for filing a return late. The interest is for paying tax late. If your GSTR-3B is late, you usually pay both.

It covers GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 (monthly or quarterly) with a due date from 1 July 2021, and interest on any tax paid late. It does not cover GSTR-9, GSTR-4, GSTR-10 or penalties.

For the due dates themselves, see GST return due dates.

How it works

How to use it

1
Choose what you want to work out: a late GSTR-3B, a late GSTR-1, or interest only.
2
Enter the due date of the return, and the date you filed it (or plan to).
3
Say whether it is a nil return. If not, choose your turnover for the last financial year.
4
For GSTR-3B, enter the tax you paid in cash after using input tax credit. If you had paid the challan by the due date, enter that cash too.
5
Read the result. It shows the days late, the late fee (split into CGST and SGST), the interest and the total.
The method

How it is worked out

The steps the calculator follows

Days late
Filing date less due date. Due on the 20th and filed on the 30th is 10 days.
Late fee
Days late × ₹50 (₹20 for a nil return), up to the limit in the table below. Half is CGST, half is SGST or UTGST.
Tax charged interest
Tax paid in cash, less any cash that was already in your cash ledger from the due date.
Interest
Tax charged interest × 18% × days late ÷ 365
Rounding
Each amount to the nearest rupee: 50 paise or more goes up, less is dropped.

Late fee limits (one return, for returns from June 2021):

Your casePer dayMaximum
Nil return₹20₹500
Turnover last year up to ₹1.5 crore₹50₹2,000
Above ₹1.5 crore, up to ₹5 crore₹50₹5,000
Above ₹5 crore₹50₹10,000

Each figure is the total of the CGST part and the SGST or UTGST part, which are equal. The full rules and examples are in our guide to the GST late fee for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Our reading: GSTN's interest formula divides by “the number of days in the year”. We use 365, as published summaries of GSTN's 2026 formula do.

Worked examples

Worked examples

GSTR-3B late
Example 1: GSTR-3B 10 days late. A shop in Delhi files monthly and had a turnover of ₹80 lakh last year. Its GSTR-3B for September 2026 was due on 20 October 2026. It files on 30 October 2026. After using its input tax credit, it pays ₹1,20,000 tax in cash.
  • Days late10
  • Late fee10 × ₹50 = ₹500
  • Interest₹1,20,000 × 18% × 10 ÷ 365 = ₹592
  • Total₹1,092
10 days late. Late fee: 10 × ₹50 = ₹500 (₹250 CGST and ₹250 SGST). Interest: ₹1,20,000 × 18% × 10 ÷ 365 = ₹591.78, so ₹592. Total: ₹1,092.
Challan paid on time
Example 2: the same return, but the challan was paid on time. The shop paid a challan of ₹1,00,000 on 18 October, and the money stayed in its cash ledger until it filed. It paid the other ₹20,000 on 30 October.
  • Not charged interest₹1,00,000
  • Interest₹20,000 × 18% × 10 ÷ 365 = ₹99
  • Late fee₹500
  • Total₹599
The ₹1,00,000 is not charged interest. Interest: ₹20,000 × 18% × 10 ÷ 365 = ₹98.63, so ₹99. The late fee is still ₹500. Total: ₹599. Paying the challan by the due date saved ₹493 of interest.
Late fee capped
Example 3: GSTR-3B 120 days late, turnover ₹3 crore. A trader's GSTR-3B for May 2026 was due on 20 June 2026. It is filed on 18 October 2026, with ₹2,00,000 tax paid in cash.
  • Days late120
  • Late fee120 × ₹50 = ₹6,000, limit ₹5,000
  • Interest₹2,00,000 × 18% × 120 ÷ 365 = ₹11,836
  • Total₹16,836
120 days late. Late fee: 120 × ₹50 = ₹6,000, but the limit for turnover up to ₹5 crore is ₹5,000, so ₹5,000. Interest: ₹2,00,000 × 18% × 120 ÷ 365 = ₹11,835.62, so ₹11,836. Total: ₹16,836. The late fee stops growing at the limit. The interest does not.
Interest only
Example 4: tax paid late by challan (interest only). A business finds it paid ₹30,000 too little tax for August 2026. That tax was due on 20 September 2026. It pays the shortfall on 19 October 2026.
  • Days late29
  • Interest₹30,000 × 18% × 29 ÷ 365 = ₹429
29 days late. Interest: ₹30,000 × 18% × 29 ÷ 365 = ₹429.04, so ₹429.

What changed in 2026: the portal now works out the interest

From the January 2026 tax period, the GST portal works out the interest on a late GSTR-3B by itself. It shows the amount in Table 5.1 of your next GSTR-3B.

  • The portal counts only the tax that was not already in your cash ledger. It takes the lowest cash ledger balance from the due date until the tax is paid, and charges interest only on the rest.
  • The figure it fills in is the least you must pay. You can raise it if your own working shows more, but you cannot lower it.
  • So, if you know a return will be late, pay the challan by the due date and leave the money in your cash ledger. That part then carries no interest. The late fee still applies.

The rule behind this is rule 88B of the CGST Rules. The 2026 change is in how the portal applies it.

GST interest: 18% or 24%? Section 50 in plain words

Interest on late GST comes from section 50 of the CGST Act. The GST portal works it out for each tax head (IGST, CGST, SGST or UTGST, and cess).

Part of section 50What it says, in shortRate
Section 50(1)Tax paid after the due date carries interest for the days it stays unpaid.18% a year
Proviso to 50(1)When you file a return late, interest is only on the tax you pay in cash. Tax paid with input tax credit carries no interest. This does not apply if the return is filed after the officer has started proceedings for that period (sections 73, 74 or 74A).
Section 50(2)Interest runs from the day after the tax was due.
Section 50(3)Input tax credit that was wrongly taken and used carries interest.18% a year

18% or 24%? It is 18% for both. The law lets the government set up to 24% for wrongly used input tax credit, and 24% was the rate first notified in 2017. The Finance Act, 2022 cut it to 18% with effect back to 1 July 2017. So interest on a late payment and interest on wrongly used credit are both 18% a year today.

Interest, like the late fee, is paid in cash. Input tax credit can pay only output tax. See cash or input tax credit.

Our reading: if you searched for a “GST penalty calculator”, the late fee is most likely what you need. A real penalty under the GST law comes only with a notice or order from an officer, so no calculator can tell you that amount in advance.

Can the late fee be waived? Only the government can waive it, by a notification. At its 57th meeting on 8 October 2026, the GST Council recommended waiving the late fee on a GSTR-3B filed by the end of the month in which it was due, for turnover up to ₹5 crore. As of 18 October 2026, this has not been notified, so this calculator still adds the normal late fee. Interest would be payable even after such a waiver. More in can the GST late fee be waived.

What this calculator does not do

  • Due dates before 1 July 2021. Older periods had other late fee limits and one-time relief schemes.
  • Returns more than three years old. A return cannot be filed once three years have passed from its due date, and the portal blocks it. The calculator warns you.
  • GSTR-9, GSTR-9C, GSTR-4 and GSTR-10. These have their own late fee rules. For the annual return, see GSTR-9 due date and late fee.
  • Each tax head on its own. The portal works out interest for IGST, CGST, SGST and cess one by one. We work it out on the total, so the portal's figure can differ slightly.
  • Penalties and demands raised by an officer.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How is GST interest calculated?

Interest = tax paid late in cash × 18% × days late ÷ 365. The days run from the day after the due date to the day you pay. For a late GSTR-3B, the tax that was already in your cash ledger from the due date is left out.

Is GST interest 18% or 24%?

18%. The law allows up to 24% for input tax credit wrongly taken and used, but the Finance Act, 2022 set that rate at 18% from 1 July 2017. Interest on late payment of tax is also 18% a year.

What is the interest rate for late payment of GST?

18% a year, for each day the tax stays unpaid after the due date. It is charged only on the part paid in cash when you file a late return.

How is the GST late fee calculated?

Days late × ₹50 for each return (₹20 for a nil return), up to a limit. The limit is ₹500 for a nil return, and ₹2,000, ₹5,000 or ₹10,000 based on your turnover in the last financial year.

What is the maximum late fee for GSTR-3B?

₹500 for a nil return. Otherwise ₹2,000 if your turnover last year was up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹5,000 up to ₹5 crore, and ₹10,000 above ₹5 crore. The same limits apply to GSTR-1.

What is the late fee for a nil GST return?

₹20 a day (₹10 CGST and ₹10 SGST), and never more than ₹500 for one return. A nil GSTR-3B means no tax to pay; a nil GSTR-1 means no sales.

What changed in GST interest calculation in 2026?

From the January 2026 tax period, the GST portal works out the interest on a late GSTR-3B and fills it into your next GSTR-3B. It leaves out cash that was already in your cash ledger from the due date. You can raise the figure but not lower it.

Can I reduce the interest the portal shows in GSTR-3B?

No. The portal's figure is the least you must pay. If you think it is wrong, check the dates and your cash ledger balance. You can enter a higher amount if your own working shows more.

Is interest charged on the full GST or only on the cash part?

Only on the cash part, when you file a late return. Tax paid with input tax credit carries no interest. This changes if the return is filed after an officer has started proceedings for that period.

Can I pay the late fee or interest from input tax credit?

No. Input tax credit can pay only output tax. Late fee and interest are paid in cash, from the Electronic Cash Ledger.

Does this calculator work for quarterly (QRMP) returns?

Yes. Enter the due date of your quarterly GSTR-3B (22nd or 24th, by State) or quarterly GSTR-1 (13th).

Can the GST late fee be waived?

Only by a government notification. The GST Council recommended a waiver for some late GSTR-3B returns on 8 October 2026, but as of 18 October 2026 it had not been notified.

Is the GST late fee a penalty?

No. A late fee is a fixed charge for filing late, worked out by the portal. A penalty is set by a tax officer in a notice or order. This calculator does not work out penalties.

Can I file a GST return after three years?

No. A return cannot be filed once three years have passed from its due date, and the GST portal blocks it.

GST late fee kitni lagti hai?

Har return par ₹50 roz (nil return par ₹20 roz). Maximum nil return par ₹500, aur baaki returns par pichhle saal ke turnover ke hisaab se ₹2,000, ₹5,000 ya ₹10,000.

GST interest kaise calculate karein?

Cash mein bhara gaya late tax × 18% × late din ÷ 365. Jo paisa due date se cash ledger mein pada tha, us par interest nahi lagta.
