Moved office, changed your business name or added a signatory? Here is how to update your GST registration.

How to amend your GST registration: change address, name or details — FilingSetu blog guide

Keep your GSTIN details current, amendments are quick when you know the category.

Your GST registration is not set in stone. When your business changes — address, name, contact details or signatories — you are required to update your GSTIN through an amendment. This guide covers exactly what can be amended, which changes are instant versus which need approval, the documents each needs, and the 15-day rule that trips businesses up.

Key takeaways
  • Most changes must be reported within 15 days of the event.
  • Amendments split into core (need officer approval) and non-core (auto-approved).
  • Each change needs matching proof — a new rent agreement for an address, a resolution for a signatory.
  • A change of PAN cannot be amended; it requires a fresh registration.

What you can amend

  • Principal or additional place of business.
  • Legal or trade name of the business (without a PAN change).
  • Authorised signatories, partners or directors.
  • Contact details, and the goods or services (HSN/SAC) you deal in.

What you cannot amend

Some changes go beyond an amendment. A change in PAN — for example, when a proprietorship becomes a company — cannot be handled through amendment. It needs a fresh GST registration and the cancellation of the old one. A change in the place of business to another state also requires a new registration in that state.

How the process runs

You file the amendment on the GST portal under the registration tab, attach supporting proof (such as a new rent agreement for an address change) and submit. Some changes are approved automatically; others need an officer's sign-off, which we cover in our core vs non-core amendments guide.

Update within 15 days
Most changes must be reported within 15 days of the event. Stale registration details can cause invoice and e-way bill mismatches, and repeated discrepancies can flag your GSTIN for scrutiny.

“An amendment is only as good as the proof behind it. Match the document to the change and approval is routine.”

Frequently asked questions

How long does a core amendment take to approve?

Core amendments are usually approved by the officer within about 15 working days, provided the supporting documents are clear and complete.

Can I change my business name without changing PAN?

Yes. A change in legal or trade name that does not involve a new PAN is a core amendment. A PAN change requires a fresh registration.

Is there a fee to amend GST registration?

There is no government fee for an amendment. The only cost is professional help if you choose to have it filed for you.
