MSME, IEC, Trademark and FSSAI: the business registrations you actually need — FilingSetu blog guide

The right registrations turn paperwork into leverage: cheaper credit, legal protection and market access.

Beyond tax, a handful of registrations can unlock cheaper credit, legal protection and access to new markets, and some of them are free. Here's a plain-English guide to the four that matter most for Indian businesses, and how to tell which ones apply to you.

Key takeaways
  • Udyam (MSME) is free and unlocks cheaper credit, payment protection and fee rebates.
  • IEC is mandatory to import or export goods; situational for services.
  • Trademark makes your brand name and logo legally yours.
  • FSSAI is required for any food business — the tier depends on turnover.

Registrations aren't just paperwork; each one is leverage. The trick is knowing which your business actually needs, and filing them on the right portal without rejections.

MSME / Udyam registration

Udyam is the government's recognition for micro, small and medium enterprises, and it's free. It unlocks priority-sector lending at lower interest, protection against delayed payments under the MSMED Act, and a 50% discount on trademark government fees. Almost every small business should have it.

Udyam and PAN cost nothing
There's no government fee for Udyam or PAN, and at FilingSetu we waive our professional fee too, a chartered accountant still checks your classification and files it correctly.

Import Export Code (IEC)

If you trade goods across borders, an IEC from the DGFT is mandatory, there's no way to clear customs without it. For services exporters, it's needed when you claim foreign-trade-policy benefits or receive certain foreign payments. It's a one-time registration with no annual renewal.

Trademark registration

Your brand name and logo are assets, and a trademark makes them legally yours. You can file in 2 to 3 days and use the ™ symbol immediately; full registration (®) follows examination and publication. Filing early protects you before a competitor claims a similar mark.

FSSAI food licence

Any business that makes, stores, transports or sells food needs an FSSAI registration or licence. Which tier applies depends on turnover and scale:

  • Basic registration: small operators with turnover up to ₹12 lakh.
  • State licence: mid-sized businesses.
  • Central licence: large or multi-state operations.

“File the right registration the first time. A CA validates your documents against each portal's requirements before submitting, so nothing bounces back.”
