About GST for e-commerce

E-commerce sellers face stricter GST rules than offline traders. If you sell through a marketplace, GST registration is mandatory regardless of turnover, and the platform deducts TCS at 0.5% on your sales, which you then reconcile and claim.

Add multi-state warehousing (think fulfilment centres), returns and varied product rates, and e-commerce GST quickly becomes a reconciliation-heavy exercise that rewards good systems.

FAQs

E-commerce GST questions

Is GST registration mandatory for online sellers?

If you sell through an e-commerce marketplace that collects TCS, registration is mandatory regardless of turnover. Pure-services sellers via platforms have some relaxations, but most product sellers must register.

What is TCS on e-commerce?

Marketplaces deduct Tax Collected at Source at 0.5% on the net value of your taxable sales — halved from 1% with effect from 10 July 2024 — and deposit it against your GSTIN. You reconcile and claim this credit in your returns.

Do I need to register in multiple states?

If you store inventory in fulfilment centres across states, you may need a GST registration in each of those states, since the place of stock is a place of supply.

What GST rate do I charge online?

The same rate the product attracts offline, based on its HSN, typically 5% to 28%. We map your full catalogue to correct rates.

How are returns handled under GST?

Sales returns are adjusted through credit notes, reducing your output tax. With high return volumes, careful tracking is essential to avoid over-paying.

Can D2C brands on their own website skip registration?

Only until they cross the turnover threshold or sell inter-state. Most D2C brands register early to claim input credit and scale across states.
