Closing a business or below the threshold? How to cancel your GST registration without leaving loose ends.

GST cancellation: how to surrender your GSTIN correctly — FilingSetu blog guide

Cancel cleanly, file your final return, and close the loop with the department.

If you have closed your business, fallen below the registration threshold, or restructured, you can cancel your GST registration. But cancellation is not just clicking a button — there is an application to file, a final return to submit, and loose ends to close. This guide walks through when you can cancel, the exact steps, and the one filing everyone forgets.

Key takeaways
  • Cancellation is applied for in Form REG-16 with a reason and effective date.
  • After cancellation you must file a final return, GSTR-10, within 3 months.
  • Simply abandoning a GSTIN leads to late fees and officer-initiated cancellation.
  • Clear any pending returns and dues before applying.

When you can cancel

  • The business has been discontinued or transferred (sale, merger, closure).
  • Turnover has fallen below the threshold and you no longer need to be registered.
  • There is a change in constitution (for example, a proprietorship becoming a company).
  • You registered voluntarily and no longer wish to remain registered (subject to conditions).

The cancellation process step by step

  1. File any pending GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns and clear outstanding dues.
  2. Apply for cancellation in Form REG-16, stating the reason and effective date, and declaring stock held.
  3. The officer reviews and, if satisfied, issues the cancellation order in REG-19.
  4. File the final return, GSTR-10, within three months — covered in our final return guide.

Do not just stop filing
Abandoning a GSTIN without cancelling leads to daily late fees and, eventually, cancellation by the officer — which is harder to unwind and may need revocation. Cancel it properly.

“Cancellation has two halves: the application and the final return. Skip GSTR-10 and your closed GSTIN keeps generating penalties.”

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel GST registration with pending dues?

You should clear pending returns and dues first. The officer can reject a cancellation application, or the final return will still capture the liability.

How long does cancellation take?

After filing REG-16, the officer usually processes the cancellation within about 30 days, subject to any clarifications.

Do I still file GSTR-10 if I had no stock?

Yes. GSTR-10 must be filed even if there is nil stock and nil liability; it is what formally closes your registration.
